What is a Printable Eye Chart?

A printable eye chart is an optometry tool used to assess the clarity of your vision (visual acuity). The chart has rows of letters, numbers, and symbols (optotypes) of different sizes that test your near and distant vision without requiring a visit to an eye doctor.

Printable eye charts can be downloaded and printed from online sources. Some eye charts are specifically for children (pediatric eye care), while others work universally.¹

History of Eye Charts

Even before the standardized eye chart was invented, doctors used customized charts to examine vision problems. Some preferred symbols or images of varying sizes, while others used words and letters.

Eye charts became even more invaluable during the peak of the Industrial Revolution, a time when good vision was vital in securing employment. The Snellen chart was the first standardized eye chart invented, thanks to Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen.²

According to The New York Times, Dr. Snellen made the chart following a request by his colleague Dr. Franciscus Donders.³Since its introduction in 1862, the Snellen eye test remains the most widespread technique for measuring visual acuity, although other variations exist.

Structure of an Eye Chart

Generally, the structure of an eye chart consists of 11 rows of capital letters (optotypes). Only the nine letters C, D, E, F, L, O, P, T, and Z are featured in a standard Snellen chart. Other visual screening charts may consist of symbols, images, and blocks of text.

The first line has one large letter, usually the “E,” while the other lines have increasing numbers of optotypes. Each row of lines also contains smaller letters than the previous one.

The inability to read a line clearly defines an individual’s level of visual acuity. The optometrist will “refract” the eye until you see the unclear letters. The readings will help your doctor determine the correct prescription for your vision.

For example, the largest letter at the top represents a visual acuity of 20/200. This means that one has to stand 20 feet away to clearly see an object that normal eyes can see from 200 feet away. According to the US Social Security Administration (SSA), if a person has a central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye while requiring a correcting lens, they are considered “legally blind.”⁴

How to Do Home Vision Checks

Home vision checks can help you catch eye and vision problems early before your condition deteriorates.

You can do home vision checks on yourself or family members by downloading and printing an eye chart from a trusted online source and conducting a reading test.

Vision screening tests vary in accuracy, with some showing higher false negative results than others. For this reason, it’s important to follow the doctor’s guidelines accurately. Do the following to ensure accurate results:

Ensure the room and Snellen chart are well-illuminated
If you wear glasses, keep them on while you take the test
If you have difficulty reading results, record them and reach out to your doctor

Although performing an at-home vision test under your optometrist’s directions is recommended, these tests are not alternatives to professional eye exams.

Using the Printable Eye Chart: Step-By-Step Guide

Once you’re prepared to take an at-home vision check, below is a step-by-step process of using a printable eye chart:

Download your desired eye chart from your identified site.
Print the eye chart full scale on regular print paper.
Pin the chart to a wall at eye level. Ensure the room is well-lit.
Position yourself 20 feet (6 meters) away from the chart.
Cover one eye (keep your distance vision prescription glasses on).
Have someone direct you by pointing at each line as you read letters aloud. They will keep track of the letters you get right.
Continue reading row by row until you can no longer read the letters.
Note the M-unit of the smallest line where you identified the majority of letters correctly (The reading represents your visual acuity for that eye).
Cover the other eye and repeat steps 6-8.

Adults and older children with normal eyesight should be able to read the 20/20 line on the chart. Children 3-4 years old should be able to clearly see the 20/40 line, while 5-year-olds should be able to see the 20/30 line.

If you end up with results outside the standard, schedule an eye exam.

Alternative Visual Acuity Tests

If you’re unable to recognize letters from the eye chart, other tests can be conducted, such as:

Counting fingers (CF vision)
Hand movements (HM vision)
Light perception (LP vision). If you can’t identify light, this should be recorded as “no light perception (LP)”

When to Consult an Eye Doctor

Adults and children with 20/20 vision might not require medical attention unless other underlying issues exist. However, consult your doctor if your test shows abnormal results, such as being unable to see the 20/20 line (normal vision).

Your doctor will conduct a comprehensive eye exam, which involves the vision chart and other tests to determine the overall health of your eyes.

Remember, an eye chart will not measure peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, or ability to perceive contrast. It’s just one component of a comprehensive eye exam.

The Snellen Chart and Its Variants

The developments of the Snellen chart did not stop with Dr. Snellen. Since 1862, several variations have emerged. Even so, most Snellen variations share one common feature—the rectangular shape, arising from the varying numbers and sizes of optotypes on each line.

Different eye charts may have varying numbers of lines and size progression. Today’s Snellen charts observe the following rules:

Improved letter design
Use of the same number of optotypes on each line
Has a uniform 25 percent increase from line to line

The Science Behind “20/20” Vision

20/20 vision is the normal visual acuity measurement developed by Dr. Herman Snellen. Other visual acuity fractions include 20/25, 20/40, 20/50, 20/200, etc. Collectively, they’re referred to as Snellen fractions.

The first number (20) in a Snellen fraction represents the distance the person being tested is positioned from the chart. The second number represents the distance at which the smallest standardized letters are clearly visible.

Someone having 20/20 vision means they can clearly see an object positioned 20 feet away. According to research, only about 35% of adults have natural 20/20 vision.⁸

Alternatives and Modern Iterations of the Snellen Chart

Although the Snellen chart is considered quick, portable, affordable, and widely used, it has several drawbacks. This includes difficulty interpreting results, language barriers, and cognitive disabilities. These disadvantages have encouraged improvements in more modern charts, such as the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS).

Below is a list of modern iterations of the Snellen chart:

Tumbling E chart. Also invented by Dr. Snellen, this chart is helpful for people who can’t read letters and children unfamiliar with the alphabet. The chart uses only one letter (capital E) that faces different directions. The person being examined uses their fingers to show which direction the letter “E” is facing.
Landolt C eye chart (Japanese vision test). Invented by Edmund Landolt, a Swiss ophthalmologist, this chart is similar to the tumbling E chart but uses Landolt’s broken ring symbols in various orientations. It measures high-contrast visual acuity and it’s helpful for illiterate or non-English speakers.
Jaeger eye chart. Invented in 1954, this small hand-held card consists of short blocks of text in different sizes. The person being tested reads the different blocks of text to determine their visual acuity.
LEA Symbols Chart. This test utilizes symbols and play. It was designed for young children to eliminate language barriers.⁶ The child is required to name the symbols and their colors to measure visual acuity.
LogMar Chart. Invented in 1976 by the National Vision Research Institute of Australia, this chart measures visual acuity using the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution. It enables more accurate results than the Snellen chart and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the worldwide standard test for clinical eye trials. Examples of Logmar charts include the ETDRS and the Bailey-Lovie chart.
Freiburg Visual Acuity Test (FrACT).⁷ This is a computerized Landolt C chart where the patient is randomly presented with Landolt C symbols in various sizes and orientations, and they respond by pressing a button based on their interpretation.

The treatment

“I have used the treatment on my patients for more than 20 years. Many of these patients have completely recovered from the disease. Even when doctors gave them no chances. The best way to eliminate a tumor is for it to come in contact with Sodium Bicarbonate, baking soda. Sodium Bicarbonate can be applied as an enema for digestive cancers, intravenous injection for brain and lung tumors and inhalation for tumors in the upper respiratory system. Breast, lymph system and subcutaneous tumors can be treated with a local perfusion. Internal organ tumors should be treated with baking soda by applying it directly into the arteries. It’s also important to treat every type of cancer with the proper dose,” Dr. Simonchini explains, and continues:

“For phleboclisis, you’ll need about 500 cm. of 5% or 8.4% solution; in some cases, the mixture only needs to be salty enough. During every treatment, it’s important to know that tumor colonies come back between the 3 and 4 day, and suffer a collapse between the 4 and 5 day, so a minimum of 6 days of treatment is required. The treatment should be repeated for 4 cycles, and has no other side-effects other than thirst and weakness.”

“For skin cancer, you should rub a 0.7% iodine tincture on the affected areas 20-30 times a day. Afterwards, the tumor will not return,” Dr. Simonchini says.

Here are the main symptoms of Candida infection: Chronic fatigue; Obsessive-compulsive disorder; Anxiety and irritability; Brain fog and nausea; Chronic skin disorders; Chronic digestive disorders; Mood changes; Starch and sugar cravings.

If you have notice at least 2 of these symptoms, you may have an advanced stage of candida infections which may result in cancer, so they should never be ignored.

Treatment and prevention of candida infections

The fungal development must be kept in check. Left untreated, candida can lead to candidiasis which can cause symptoms that mimic other diseases and result in perforation in the intestines and leaky gut syndrome. This will allow protein to attack your blood cells. In order to prevent further problems, we first need to eliminate the foods that feed candida – sugar and starch. This means no bread, candy, fresh fruit, pasta and rice for a while. Focus on eating raw fruit and steamed vegetables, and some people have had great results with grapefruit seeds. Dr. Simonchini recommends using aluminum-free baking soda for the treatment of cancer. It can be found in almost all health stores and pharmacies.

How the therapy works

Sodium Bicarbonate,Baking soda, significantly increases the alkalinity of your blood which destroys the fungi. Due to this, baking soda quickly disintegrates the tumor, leaving it without defense.

For stomach, colon, rectal and oral cancer, you need to take 1 teaspoon of Sodium Bicarbonate, baking soda, in a glass of water every morning and evening for a month. In most cases, this is enough time to eliminate the tumor. The therapy should last 3-4 weeks and not a day more. Dr. Simonchini’s therapy also usually requires intravenous injections as well. For best results, you’ll need 500 ml. of 5% baking soda solution applied in the vein directly every day. Do this for 24 days, then go for a scan. Vaginal fungal infections have become pretty common nowadays and according to Dr. Simonchini, they are the main culprit for cervical cancer and vaginal tumors. In order to treat these problems, you need to wash your vagina with a mixture made of 2 l. of filtered water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. This will defeat the fungi that are causing the problem and prevent them from coming back in the future.

There are doctors who published studies and experiments in the 1940’s using liquid Vitamin C for the treatment of Cancer, and found that 40-60,000 units of liquid Vitamin C administered intraveinously not only cured the big “C”, but also left behind none of the side effects that chemotherapy does. Turmeric, is a rhizome (A type of horizontal, usually underground stem that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes; AKA as a rootstock.) It’s related to ginger root (also a rhizome) both are classified as members of the Zingiberacaea family; it has been a stellar staple in the pharmacopeia of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic medicine for eons; It’s been in continuous use for thousands of years as a medicine, spice (curry) and yellow dye.

Curcumin and Curcuminoids

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is the yellow pigment found in the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa). Curcumin is one of three known curcuminoids present in turmeric, the other two being desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin.

Scientists have still not identified all the constituents in turmeric. Researchers continue to discover new curcuminoids. Current estimations are that turmeric contains well over a hundred chemical compounds which are primarily located in the essential oil of this complex medicinal spice.

A major problem with Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is curcumin’s (CUR) low bioavailability. Curcumin is the key active constituent of Turmeric. A preponderance of animal and clinical studies reveal that the concentrations of CUR in blood plasma, urine, and peripheral tissues, if detectable at all, are extremely low regardless of dosage size.

What is Bioavailability?

According to the Merck manual, “Bioavailability refers to the extent to and rate at which the active moiety (drug or metabolite) enters systemic circulation, thereby accessing the site of action.”

Essentially, bioavailability is about how much of an ingested substance is actually absorbed by our bodies. It follows that substances with poor bioavailability will not be effective for healing purposes.

Research Confirms Turmeric’s Low Bioavailability

Key Points:

Numerous curcumin studies confirm that very low blood serum levels are reached when curcumin is orally administered. The majority of orally ingested curcumin gets metabolized before it reaches the bloodstream. Increasing the dose does not result in greater absorption.

The route of administration and method of preparation are major factors affecting the bioavailability or serum levels of turmeric.

Turmeric’s bioavailabity can be enhanced with the addition of specific Adjuvants.

Studies

Low Serum Concentratiions

A study on the fate of curcumin in the rat (1978) by Whalstrom and Blennow showed oral curcumin was poorly absorbed in the gut. When 1g/kg of curcumin was orally administered to the rats only a negligible amount of curcumin was found in their blood plasma. About 75% of it was excreted via the feces.

A study in 1980 by Ravindranath et al found when rats were orally administered 400 mg of curcumin, no trace of curcumin was found in the heart blood while only a small trace was found in the portal blood within 15 min to 24 hours of administration.

Another recent study by Yang et al found that when 10 mg/kg of curcumin was orally administered only 0.36 µg/ml of curcumin was found in the blood serum.

A pilot study conducted by Sharma et al. on patients with colorectal cancer. The patients were given Curcuma extract which contained 36–180 mg curcumin in proprietary capsule for 4 months. After 29 days of oral curcumin: Neither curcumin nor its metabolites were detected in the plasma, blood and urine. Although traces of curcumin and curcumin sulfate were found in feces.

Tissue Distribution

In another study: Absorption and tissue distribution of curcumin in rats. Ravindranath et al found after orally administering 400 mg of curcumin to rats: “only traces of the unchanged molecule were found in the liver and kidney. At 30 min, 90% of the curcumin was found in the stomach and small intestine, but only 1% was present at 24 h. [hours].”

NOTE: Very few studies have been done on Curcumin and tissue distribution.

Metabolites

Metabolites are the intermediate and final products of the process known as metabolism, which is from the Greek word for “change.” Metabolism is a step-wise series of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. The term metabolites commonly refer to small molecules.

Primary metabolites are necessary for the normal growth and maintenance of life. Secondary metabolites support primary metabolite activity indirectly and serve other important ecological functions. Metabolites are a natural occurrence formed when as part of an inherent biological process that breaks down and eliminates various compounds.

Research indicates that metabolites of curcumin, instead of curcumin itself, are detected in plasma or serum following oral consumption.

The majority of studies have shown that these metabolites are actually less active or potent compared to curcumin itself.
Bottom Line: when curcumin is metabolized the potency of its metabolites are less potent than curcumin.

The intestine and liver, is where oral curcumin is conjugated (the formation of a water-soluble derivative of a chemical by its combination with another compound, such as glutathione, glucuronate, or sulfate.) into metabolites.

Based on various studies the metabolites produced are: curcumin glucuronides and curcumin sulfates or, alternately, reduced to hexahydrocurcumin(HHC) and Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC). Again most studies have shown that these metabolites are less biologically active compared to the parent compound curcumin.

Short Half-life

Half-life is the time it takes for a drug or other ingested substance to lose half its strength. Medications with a short half-life must be taken several times a day, to maintain therapeutically effective concentrations of blood serum levels.
In contrast, medications with longer half lives maintain effective blood serum levels for much longer periods of time and can be taken less frequently.

The studies by Whalstrom and Blennow demonstrated curcumin’s rapid systemic excretion from the body or short half-life. As mentioned when 1g/kg curcumin was given orally to rats around 75% of the curcumin was excreted via the feces with only trace amounts found in the urine. A short half -life decreases Turmeric’s therapeutic effect in the body. More studies are needed in order to draw definitive conclusions about Turmeric’s half-life.

Getting enough hydrogen peroxide inside the cancer cells is key

It has been clinically demonstrated that the spread or metastatis of cancer is “inversely proportional to the amount of oxygen around the cancer cells.” That means that the more oxygen, the slower the cancer spreads. (NaturalNews) Officials from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) are making headlines with extraordinary new claims about a wonder drug that can supposedly cure MERS, AIDS, Ebola, Sars and even cancer.
